What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession, regulated by the Health Professions Council (HPC) and Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (CSP), concerned with human function and movement and maximising potential.

The main aim of physiotherapy is to restore proper functioning to the body. In the case of permanent disease or injury, the aim is to reduce the impact of the dysfunction. Physiotherapists help and treat people of all ages with physical problems caused by illness, accident or ageing.

What do Chartered Physiotherapists do?

Pen Y Lôn offer an holistic approach, working to improve your mobility and health and to reduce the risk of injuries. In many cases, an injury is caused by different factors working together. For example, persistent back pain may be triggered by a combination of poor posture, being overweight, repetitive work-related activities and incorrect technique when playing sport. The physiotherapist aims to treat the back pain, but also to address the factors which contribute to the cause. This approach aims to reduce the risk of the injury happening again.

Pen Y Lôn draw upon a wide range of techniques for treatment which are tailored towards the individual patients needs. These include:

Manual Therapy:

Manual Therapy is a form of treatment intervention that encompasses various hands-on techniques that decrease pain, stimulate the natural healing processes and minimize soft tissue and joint restrictions. They include mobilisations, manipulation and massage. It is a fundamental and integral component of physiotherapists’ treatment and management when indicated. All our physiotherapists have been trained in manual therapy. Continuing professional development ensures that such skills are maintained and developed beyond graduate level for a therapist’s entire career.

Electrotherapy:

Chartered Physiotherapists often use sophisticated electrical apparatus as an adjunct to Manual Therapy that help in the body’s own natural healing mechanisms.

Exercise:

These include posture retraining/core stability, muscle strengthening, cardiovascular training, and stretching.

Traction:

This is the application of a mild stretch to the muscles, ligaments, and tissue components of the spine to provide pain relief. Traction devices may be used to treat either the cervical spine (neck) or the lumbar spine (low back). It provides effective pain relief for a variety of spine disorders resulting from conditions such as: muscle spasm, degenerative joint disease (Osteoarthritis), nerve root compression, spondylosis, facet joint dysfunction, myofascial syndrome and disc related injuries.

Other Services:

Taping/splinting, correcting flawed sporting techniques, providing or offering information on equipment aids such as wheelchairs and walking frames.
